Pazhassi Dam Location
Pazhassi Dam is located near Iritty, about 37 km to the east of Kannur. The dam is built across the Valapattanam River located near Kuyiloor Puzha. The reservoir supplies drinking and irrigation water for the entire Kannur District.
Iritty has the nearest bus station. Mattanur is the nearest city about 21 km away. Kannur has the nearest railway station.
Kacherikadavu, Chandanakampara and Virajpet are nearby cities.
The nearest airport is in Mangalore about 160 km away. The Kozhikode airport is about 160 km away.
Pazhassi Dam History
The dam project was commissioned in 1979 by the then Prime Minister Mr Moraji Desai. It is named after the Kottayam King Pazhassi Raja, who laid down his life fighting against the British. The king’s birthplace is about 11 km from the dam site.
Pazhassi Dam Kannur Attractions
The dam site is a perfect spot for picnics and one day trips. Beside the reservoir is a beautiful garden, which makes Pazhassi Dam distinct from other reservoirs in Kannur District.
Boating down the river, you can come across tiny islets that provide habitat to chirping feathered friends. The Tourism Promotion Council provides pleasure boating facilities at the dam reservoir.
Other attractions in the vicinity of the dam are the sculptures of Pazhassi Raja and the Buddha’s mountain.
The best season to visit the dam is October-May.
